The route begins at the Melvindale Boat Launch (behind the Kessey Fieldhouse) and ends on the Detroit River at Belanger Park in the City of River Rouge.  The route highlights the automotive history of the region, giving paddlers a unique perspective on the industry that provides cars and other amenities that we have all come to rely on.  Several unique bascule bridges are fascinating to watch when the occasional freighter or barge passes through.  Fordson Island offers a glimpse of the original channel and a welcome green space unobstructed by the 21 boats abandoned boats that were removed in 2011.  At the base of the recently replaced Fort Street bridge, a diverse group of community partners is planning a park to commemorate the 1932 Hunger March complete with a boardwalk and accessible kayak launch.   An annual trip is held in September; tours can be organized. Check out a video of the route.
